#Let me be clear on my view, Penang

It seems that my previous entries have confused many, as I tended to write obscurely which explained my preference to leave a sense of suspension among the readers. Let me be clear, let me be clear of what I wanted to say.

Virtual Space
The world has been advancing faster than one would ever thought as we can see in the past few years. The spur of touchable screens, customized apps brought to the information flooding in our daily life. To some extents, boundaries of things have been blurred. Now one pans around the googlemap while finding his way, be the first one to obtain discount vouchers via apps, shop online and get your goods delivered to your doorstep. See - we need more spaces than ever, ironically not the physical space (well on the larger whole, sharp population increase still causes spatial & resources demands) but a virtual one. Feel tired stalking on Facebook? No problem get yourself refreshed in the Google +. But why exactly did we sign up in the first place?
- We have come to a point whereby consuming our own needs is indispensable. Just like my urge to share with you in my personal cosy little e-space here, someone else is tweeting and chatting away on Facebook.

Now retailers are cracking their brain juices not to send the best sandwich-men to the bus stations but how to reach us from the seemingly intangible wireless network. I know this sounds cliche. But what are we talking here? The space. Retailers hunger for a new space - the virtual space as much as they wish for a real premise in the neighborhood plaza. The magic of mathematics further proved them right, they needn't risk any of their assets.
And this space emanates from us - the consumers, for our response on their tactics. A perfectly sound economic model.

Perhaps Maslow's hierarchy explains this better. We are always moving up the pyramid. We need shelter, therefore we built the houses. Now we need a medium of expression and consumption, so we constructed the virtual space.

Physical Space
Our needs for physical spaces have certainly made an impact on the culture. We know meaningful old houses were torn down to make way for the new alien-looking ones. Think about this: Putting ourselves in the shoes of tourists, we often assume that we need to cater a handful of hotel spaces for them so we are profited from their arrival. They are here to see our culture, our history, the everyday life that we are living with. Now that we have torn down every row of shophousess, the Wembley cinema at Noordin street, 春满园 and places, just to make sure the incoming tourists enjoy maximum comfort. Why beating our own noses? definitely not for pleasure huh.
The capitalist called it the demise of old buildings, gone are the days of poverty and backward when investment makes wonders. Policy makers nodding away knowing top-down control is a plausible move. They too, envisioned their version of futurists Penang.
Maslow was right, the society needs security too.

While Noordin street undergoes its Plastic Surgery to be the new mini mid-valley, I do question if we are creating History? or simply deleting the Social Memories?

On one hand we are craving for virtual space, on the other hand we are forgetting the physical space.

Someone once said, Historic buildings are quite often sick too. So then they need to be removed.
oh well,
Architects are not Doctors, they fell sick too.

3rd Day 1700

Before going into my Monologue stance, few things in my mind that I think worth sharing.

Once upon a time in the rural kingdom of the West with a King named John. John was having a good life, lived in the Majestic Castle with groups of servant. He need not worried about his life nor frowning upon any deficiencies that commoners had to face in their life. Whenever he was hungry, he would be served with scrumptious meals so life was a luxury for him. However comfort his life is, John has an eccentric habit when it comes to quenching his thirst. He got up early every morning, dressed well and sauntered with delightful pace to the tiny well of the backyard, scooped up a vessel of water and swallowed the icy-cold water bit by bit. For him, that water is the best form of stimulant for the stupor of morning grogginess.. Story ends.

Moral values? Appreciate the very moment you have while there are still opportunities. The metaphor here is perhaps the knowledge as water. You might get it easily, or you might prefer to seek it on your own. What is more important, ultimately, is the journey of finding them before the moment of enlightenment. Incidentally you might end up grasping nothing tangible but don't forget the seemingly Universal principle of cycles - Whatever comes will go in the same way. Knowledge as we know it, is intangible. As far as we concern about our own consciousness, there is something that we can't deny anymore - that we as the human are bound to experential learning. The elderly would have probably put it that way - No pain, No gain. Everyone is the same.

In this pursuit of dream that calls for variant definition from one person to another, we are constantly being reminded of the stark reality whereby money, time and practicality have to tolerated. We know in that manner, passion and health (although indirectly) are the perishable trade-off. However insightful we are, we have to be reminded that if time were to be the neutral element, passion & health outweighs money & practicality to certain extents. God plans but human work the plans so to speak.

There will be no quintessential pathway nor shortcuts; but the most suitable one that you will single out as you move forward, be it the comfortable or onerous one. Comfort, is a relatively radical word, exists in its most bipolar state in nature. As much as you are yearning for it, you will not be comfortable with the comfort once it has been attained. Simply means to walk out of your comfort zones ensures consistent comfort when you have regained it in the end of the day. In contrast, banality would haunt you in a persisting comfort environment resulting in a traumatic boredom.

Stake, our best enemy often presents itself in a 50-50 manner trying to keep you sitting on the fence than making any critical judgment. Whilst not to compromise our minds and intuition, we have always made a decision somewhat proportional to the level of confidence. Confidence, putting it on the scale of measurement, gives us readings across the wide-ranging personality from arrogant, humble to submissive. That perhaps defines a "style", in the interpretation of an art student. But certainly being confident doesn't account for being loud and vice-versa.

In this world of uncertainty, oddly enough some people could have reacted for the sake of "face" issue. So the ensuing action was to up the ante for that game of gamble, hoping incessantly in the sanguine attitude that things are going to turn up his way. Well, what might have been omitted was the White Elephant that would surface even though it seemed to be a good game in the very beginning. Perhaps to an economic student, it sounds more like refinancing a bad debt.

Well, I'm still beating around the bush as you can tell from my writing and in the course of my life. However well the Raison d'etre for this journey of life is to seek your dream as the way your intuition has dreamt for it, and dream it, to the FULLEST. May God bless,

But repeating 1700 hours 11 times, rewinding back and forth, I see a clearer picture of this story.
Seeing this periodic Cause & Effect relationship from a vantage point proved the positive things that were otherwise being deemed a Total Destruction.

Yesterday You welcomed my Call with Spring showers, and I took the liberty of believing it as the guidance.
Regardless of this persona in my life, I know that I have got to grasp hold of my Element.

A sudden impetus has provoked my passion once again in conjunction with this brand new Rabbit Year.
It was no doubt that this was written some time ago, approximately closed to a year but felt like yesterday in the mind.

In as much as We know that life goes on, but memory remains and dreams are made of the subconscious brain., How much can we deny the fact that retrospecting the past helps to re-inform the future?

又走完了十个乐章. 也许是人性的弱点, 总把更早一载的故事都给忘了.
前几年说的, 一双破烂的鞋丢了吧, 留住另一边也没意思. 我们不舍得的, 不是那皮革;而是那双鞋陪了我们风风雨雨的日子.

鞋丢了; 买了新的; 再破烂; 再丢. 我们都知道, 这永远都只是个循环. 找不找到舒服的鞋固然重要但不比过程的领悟来得有意义.

A long Hiatus

Desmonde understood that he has not been writing blogs for a long period of time, call it a hiatus, call it a retreat, call it whatever. The time has slipped away without anyone noticing its sickness, fell into an abyss of distraught, complication, and ultimately soul-searching that is still ongoing, felt at the tip of keypads writing this blog.

Blessed with someone special, her supports and sacrifices, her loves and trusts; which have made wondrous impacts,
blessed with families & friends around him. Blessed with the magnetic relationship he has mentioned years ago. Blessed with people he met in his lives thus far, both the heartfelt and superficial ones, both alive and dead.

Time has yet to come for a complete return, of insights that outreach to the unfathomable human world that explore the intricacy of psychology and space taken into account the human behaviors and societal mindset.

"Gini's coefficient draws a boundary between the have and have-not, forming a hierarchical separation in anything that is related to human-beings. We see houses meant for the rich, and that we have assumed shanty town is meant for the poor. We see expensive objects are affordable for the rich. No matter how cruel the reality might have chosen to represent itself, the bottom-line that most people have forgotten is about their rights for accessing information, their rights for finding their own true-selves regardless of their circumstances."

Just like the sun, it is neither belongs to Desmonde or you, but Everybody.

Thus, making space viable to all people without hierarchy remains as HIS greatest goal.

Magnetism of life

Just a lil thought...... I have been fascinated by the way magnet works especially the invincible forces that pull them together/apart. However it is pretty sarcastic to equate this with life - magnet stands for our social network . Kidding? No. If we perceive in this way:

Human as a basic entity represents ITself as a bar of magnet. It possesses at least a streak of polarizing behaviors as most of us do; sometimes it rains within us; other times we are sunshine to someone. Whatever it is, such natural phenomenon are usually cast in the internal. Most of the time human only speaks to their heart, purely a monologue going on in a simple yet complicated bio-mechanism. Sailing along the coast of ice bergs, with no sense of direction where the North & South poles are, they are typically resilient to find their "counter-poles". But things do get uneasy when there is a head-to-head collision between the same pole.

Are we opportunistic? While one believes he is unbiased, maybe we are just being selective in forming magnetic bonds. We don't work well with people of different channel and that's an inconvenient truth. So in a way, we are choosy for the sake of our happiness. Most of the time, we are just occasionally attached to a certain kind of Clicks/groups, then when the temporal dimension changes, we are no longer bonded to each other. N-S bond turn into N-N bond. Let us just imagine ourselves as tiny little magnets...floating in the fluid of the motherearth... some bonded..some un-bonding...some departed... A pool of magnet so to speak.

缘来则享，缘去则散？那是众所周知的随缘么？

To be frank, right now I am feeling some magnets breaking apart, like a demise of the Star, of the Sun, and the subsequent planetary deformation taking place in an unknown galaxy. I have lost some bondings with some magnets earlier... and the only culprit I can think of is the Time.

Sooner or later I shall find new magnetic pools...of which I am unsure whether the Vicious cycle has yet to take place. Even if the previous bonds were to be recovered, the resultant forces are not as great as the great olden days as we used to have.

Now I am scared, like, really.

But if you are lost in the physical world, this fat colonial guy might be your best guide. Cuz his finger is always pointing to the North. Don't believe me? Try to map the location on the signboard above.

Well, Penang Time Square is a huge Magnetic Compass thanks to the Sculptor. Freshly made in a warehouse at Perak Road. Now I see, why I am not lost Physically.

Ever thought life is a linear production? Of raw materials in the pre-manufacture state being passed through series of factory production before finally squeezed into nicely-fitted, dazzling boxes as the end products. We saw the professions of engineers, architects, doctors, accountants... conquered by people from all walks of life via obsolete stories; often grandmother's tales; one who studied hard, one who graduated with flying colors subsequently recruited into MNC's, big firm, then came 30 and bell rang for the life knot to be tied. Perfect. As a post-climax, story was subdued to the emergence of new lives, fatherhood came on duty regardless of Jack or Jill. At this turning point, Hokkien people usually termed it in an ironic way:" Ho Mia eh ko cho Pa Pa Liao."

That explains what we are doing everyday.

Delve into question that has long present with an answer. We knew it, even Calculator is not on par with a Tarot card, for the latter to be more precise. We will be convinced by the cruel reality that Money is our boss that we can't live without. Sooner or later, a fresh job offers us $2500~$3000 for donkey works. We will be kind enough to pull the cart but grudge the pain every single minute. Then we keep looking for chances to escape from ultimate debts. There we go, ride a merry-go-round from a freshie to Senior Engineer to Assistant Director consciously reminding ourselves of our untrimmed beard. Kids grown up and voila we've done a Great Job!

Another Tom would probably ended up as Uni Lecturer.
Same fate as Dick but he's a bit unlucky, branched out to become investor to cover his piling debts.
Well, Harry might be the lone ranger, a software innovater who found his niche area after tired of 45 office hours weekly.

But we are all moving in a SINGLE direction except for Harry (maybe, I'm not competent to say no)

For God's sake, we are the Obedient enough to the hypocritical Reality. Kinda intoxicated in his sweet words, study for the sake of dangling carrots. Work for the sake of money. Where did our Dream go? And his counterpart, Passion? Did we just tear them apart?

A medicine student might dare to dream of saving the world, construct a better tomorrow...but eventually realizes saving the world might be a lil too far...why not saving his pocket first? And so practitioners who charge $50 for a packet of pills are so prevalent especially during the midnight. We can't be more ignorant, that going against the law of economics is a suicidal act. Same as architect and others.

走了五十年,蓦然回首,才惊见当初的热忱早已烟消云散了.

As some big guys would probably indoctrinate you escaping from such "viscous cycle" of reality only by far-sighted investment or the notorious pyramidal scheme. Perhaps those hypocrites have been trying to deliver a more sensible principle which we dubbed "the SIDEWAY theory". Rather than progressing yourself in a linear projection, spreading it in side way directions could perhaps get you out of the grandmother story. A new experience of broadening horizon, as one would go "deep and breadth, wide and across" instead of "deep and into".

For example, somebody pursuing Electronic Engineering with a passion in Photography might find his niche area in Engineering photography. (a new field that nobody has explored before indeed!). OR somebody with a degree in Botany but passionate on servicing people...might eventually realized his potential as Botanic TourGuide after investing himself on a part-time Tourism course.

So then new field are being explored day by day...while we sit down and question how the hell these creative people thought of such field? and making it an invention. Perhaps innovator is solely a "sideway" advocate. So do some called it "Creativity is the root of successful entrepreneur ".

A new world requires a compounded integration.

Everyone is a designer. Forgetting your initial dream means forgetting your own self. Doing for the sake of doing it, but not for the values. An economist is a designer; for his specially formulated financial package to aid the underprivileged. (though not many seem to have such initiatives)

Guess too much to be absorbed...let's end with a Phenomenon:

"A" girl was born with a silver spoon. Everything was planned for her right from nursery to the tertiary. She enjoys everyday as much as she hates her controlled life; then she pursues her degree somewhere in the States without having a single worry for money. There she goes. Experiencing snows, attending nice spectacular fairy tales' wedding, got a nice bf...
"B" girl is not that lucky..comes from a poor family yet facing difficulty in study. Family background forced her to drop-out, working full-time to support herself.In contrast, she's a Urban Cinderella..who awaits the imaginary prince.

What makes A different from B? Money? or Spatial Value of Money - iPhone, Laptop, Sportcar... that has to do with Distributional justice? a fairer resource distribution? Imagine B is poor but living in a comfort house, carrying iPhone, Laptop, nice car without intervention of the money.

SO we've got you the System Theory of Conveyor Belt.

Sudden surge of emptiness

Haven't really updated my blog for couple weeks...instead, idling the time away in dreamy thought on my cosy bed.

Reason being? Maybe not so much of laziness BUT a Sudden Surge of Emptiness. Can't be bothered to care about boredom that seemingly exists somehow, somewhere. Hope I'm not in any kind of mental disorder though.

Perhaps this is the side-effect of long-term aki tortures... for squeezing the mind too much till a drip of cerebrum juices could hardly be seen. Now, it's time to rejuvenate the Chi.

Some thoughts flashing off my mind recently which I hope to share with you guys anytime soon.

我承认对音乐认识不多，但它帮我表达了某种情况，某天的某种看法。

我人有些古老，听的大多是旧又情感的歌。那种十年前在理发店都找不到的歌星发型。

可这歌，让我从另个角色的角度探讨这古老的传说-所谓轰隆隆之讽刺童话：

这是改变不了的现实，每个人都有写述故事的潜能。。。

Of recent me. A Green Thought.

hm.. mentally-blank on what to put down here after 120 rush hours (1-3 hour sleep daily, not that bad huh). Well..writing blogs feels kinda different from writing diaries. The latter has no restrictions while allowing you to pour daily reflections though. Some chaps would just tell you, Hey this is the world today! Go-online, paperless, Go-green!

But do we?

In terms of saving papers, yes i agree wholeheartedly but one has to be cautious that Go-green term is more of eco-intelligence as how I termed the "money-concept" in the previous post. Put it in a simpler way, it's Brainwash-ing!
How? well then some of you might find it prevalent for a normal household to be air-conditioned in Singapore which ironically happens to be in the Tropics (hot and humid is unbearable but wind & rainfall neutralize such conditions at some point). However back in the 70's before the advent of air-cond system people would look for electric fan during hot sunny days.

My point is, despite a sense of mannerism in the socio-behavioral system of human i.e. people are distinguished from the way they think and sense, when put into a larger picture, a community or group, tend to be "naturalized" into such wider group in as much as their thinking are restricted to a certain extent. While democratic decision calls for majority votes, oppositions are expected to conform to the ultimate upshot. Just like the air-cond, there were of course people rejecting such idea of cooling and yet when the whole world is believing this new guy, what's more they can say? All we might do is to thumbs-up, blindly adopting this technology cuz this is a total monopoly, a market of no rivalries. So what happens is the ensuing interests, firms wanting to be part of the system for the sake of profit, money to be more precise, trapping themselves in another spatial concept...by forming cartel perhaps, air-cond of different branding starts popping up in the market.

We all know that technological advances in a great leap ever since the Millennium causing us to undergo an exponential growth (termed in the popular video DID YOU KNOW). In fact, issue of sustainability has to deal more than just the social equity, of population explosion and widening rich_poor gap; but the forgotten mother nature and economy (ironically, yes, in order to survive - could be of money or not at all). If we study closer social-behavioral framework from the Paleolithic era to the Modern age, we could see a shift from self-sufficient agriculture to barter system and finally an economized agriculture when everything is equivalent to money values. Indeed a change from practical to physical then realistic and abstract.

This is nonetheless a linear progression although the current state suggests a rather superficial situation especially with the rapid development of virtual medium, internet, 3G and etc. However, the concept of such linear flow still remains a contending idea.. who knows it could be a Cyclical flow, when disaster hits and we are denude of all our current financial system that we must rely on the basic, primitive means of survival, growing plants, barter system and so on. One apple for two oranges?

Are we not sensitive to alternatives when we are bounded within these "abstract spatial model" of the current world? Are we, in a way, not competent with our fellow aliens because of the evil of mankind to crave for money and wealth instead of preserving our natural senses? Because nowadays we are more or less a visual animal, we rely much on what we see...not the others. For instance, air-cond shuts down our natural thermal adaptation. Cuz we are living in the tropic and it will make us less attuned to this climatic condition.

Alright, I am not anti-air-cond freak or something, I live with it too sometimes when the climate is just too unbearable. I just want to raise a concern over the concept of Go-Green. For it to work, we must make sure it is not another Spatial-concept framed by some people, just to dig the most profit from us. In other words, it means do it in the physical & practical way.

机械的节奏

哈。。与其与时间共舞，不如再歇歇脚。。。况且人生，休息就是为了走更远的路（好可怜的脚，天生就得看地上，天天磨擦，现在连休息还被这么样的形容。。。）

人家说吃得多，易发福。。。还得看消化系统吧！
近来跟sustainable, history字眼走得很靠近，愈来愈不信眼前的一切。
小时候在班上哭，老师分糖果唯的是分散我们的注意力，那不哭换来几颗糖果，在小孩的贸易世界里总算值得吧。哭就与糖果在脑海扯上了潜意思关系，哭就是糖果，再不如美丽的铅笔。。等等。小小的关系凑成了每个人不一样的历史。你童年捉蜻蜓的童影，我小时的战前小屋，他亲朋戚友的欢笑声，我夜半宁静的眼泪，生日的炸鸡，童军的日子。。。每个人都有他乡的故事，解释了今天我你他的分别。

那这些童影叙述了无数的联系物。。。你的蜻蜓，我的Nona树，他的沙滩映照。。。
昨天的历史说明了今天，创造着明天。

前者虽懂得性别的分区但男女大致上都裸身，气候不适才配上一些“棉衣”。今天我们男女有不一样的衣服，穿着。从内裤到胸罩到丁字裤，从男扮女装，女伴男装。。。今天的我们是否迷失了自我？早期的社会是否男女更平等？因为男女坦然地面对彼此的不同点，互相学习。。早期的人们很努力，明白物的价值，种了一箩菜换取一箩苹果。如今这个了解被物质蒙骗了，所以有了金钱的虚拟物品。那是现实，那超现实主义是否说那只纯粹一张废纸呢？是某个王八相出来的概念。这一切`只是我引用的假设。
从男尊女卑到女性主义到人道主义。。。我们在改变。。。到底怎么样的改变呢？
从BARTER到金钱系统。。。我们是否无能为力再没有私心？
从动用劳力到依赖机械。。。说明了其后遗症，头大四肢萎缩的人类。。。八十年代的恐惧。

Thailand YEP 2009!

here's little memories from my Youth Expedition Project in Phayakkappum Village, Mahasarakam Province in Thailand from Late May till Mid June. For 21 days, we shared pains and joy, cant really describe the feelings even now. It was very enriching and enjoyable. I miss you guys a lot yo!

I remember vividly the very first day we arrived in Rangsit, a small town about 1 km away from Bangkok, then we had our first dinner and stayed overnight before moving up to Phayakkapum Phisai, Mahasarakan province at the north-eastern of Thailand. So basically we spent the 2nd day sleeping in the stuffy minivan as the journey was kinda long haul, took about 6-7 hours before reaching our destination. By a twist of fate, my friend managed to get this Church as our temporary lodging which is actually no far away from our construction site. The good news was, yeah, there were proper shower rooms, kitchen, changing room and etc. but the nightmare was those freaky huge bugs that we're gonna spend our days with! There were a lot of them especially after the sunset and in Thailand, sun sets very early around 6pm so the darkness falls right before dinner time. (oh maybe i have been used to living in the real tropics so it was kinda new exp. to me ). Upon dusk, you'll get to see crickets, praying mantis and bettle crawling & spreading all over the floors, the ceiling, the walls, and sometimes in our FOODS! OMG! the great thing was, the minimum bugs sizes you could see were at least 4cm or greater! too bad there wasn't any biology student in my group or else they could have done their specimen sampling over there :) There was another day that the school teachers served us Fried Butterfly!

Back to our work, we didn't actually accomplish our community hall due to time contraints but lucky we managed to cover up till the walls and so we paid the locals all the remaining cash to expedite the roof anytime soon. Before getting our hands dirty for the construction, we splitted our groups into two, one responsible for teaching English in 2 village schools and the other group in charge of the construction. The kids were so innocent and lovely, they were so happy to welcome us as they have never seen real foreigners before. Well, we played with them more than giving lessons. :) You know, there were lots of language barriers occured so what actually happened was we did a lot of chicken & duck talkings, showing gestures using simple Thai words. It was really mind-cracking ... :) and somehow we were taught basic shapes in Thai, like WongKlon for circle, Si liam pum pa for rectangle , WongWee for oval, so we fully utilized those shapes in explaining whatever we wana tell them, for example, saying WongWee to represent chicken eggs and WongKlon to tell them sit in a circle before having meals.

There were sweets & bitter during the constructions since most of us are Amateur, a lot of accidents did occur and the worst was a girl sprained her hip but thank God there wasn't any big deal after X-ray scanning. Due to our inexperiency, we seek professional instructions from Thai workers especially in digging the trench for the pad foundation as well as mixing & pouring the conglomeration ( cement and stuffs) before putting in the beams and columns. It was a hands-on experience despite gettin some cuts on my arms and leg.

Oh ya, there was one day that i realised we have been sleeping together with this Monitor Lizards in our rooms for 3 days consecutively. It was huge, around 20cm in leght, 8cm wide, with green skins and red stripes (quite rare species) and it invaded the male's changing room haha. So couple of us actually started this lizard-hunt and we got a video of it!

Basically, we spent our days teaching English in the morning, have lunch and 2 hours-nap (Thai custom) before starting the construction till evening where we would wash-up, then had our dinner , and moved on to facilitation ( sharing session which we did some bondings), and after all we had our free-n-easy time! They played guitar and drums so I have decided to learn from them :) Some would prefer Private Sharings (we called it HTHT- heart to heart sharing) under the lonely moonlight... till the clock strikes 12, and then we knocked out.

For the last few days in that village, we were re-arranged in 5 groups and had our Homestay with the locals. Me and friends went to this family whose working as farmers, we had to sleep early at night around 9pm and got up around 4am to help them planting paddy in the field. In the afternoon, again we walked around the village and guess what, i managed to borrow a Motorbike from the Village head so we rode around the narrow road with paddy field on our sides! it was so enjoying esp. the breeze in the late afternoon! And the kids taught us how to pluck Waterlily ( apparently there was a big pond of lilies) and we played around with our cameras (cuz they're so excited to see such technologies). :)
I felt so relaxing and really really missed those slacked lifestyle i had over there.... but not so much as i missed my Dear.

After all, we had our cultural exchange nigth where the villagers performed some Thai traditional dances to us and we do likewise. We sang A Singapore song and did some friendship dances with them, not to mention The Chicky Dance that was formulated for the kids! They love to dance! And Limbo as well! So we bid farewell to them and had our own Free-n -easy for the following 5 days in Thailand!

We moved back to Bangkok then proceed to Khacanaburi, a small touristic spot due West of Bangkok. 3 hours bus ride. I have to recommend you this nice spot, we stayed in one of the Back packing hostel, a floating hostel on the River Kwai, the view was spectacular especially when the sunsets. Since I was the only one with Motorbike license, i taught my fellow members how to ride the machine and we rented 4 motorbikes and made our ways due north to Erawan Waterfall which was 65km away from our hostel. It was really a nice experience for us. We've never imagine to ride a motorbike with 80km/h for 1and a half hour! Eventually we got pains in our ass! It became numb!

The waterfall was imposing, huge spot of clean waters with fishes in it, you could feel they were bitting on your body hair whenever you dip your foot in it. Well, it might be a good reflexology who knows!
We actually spent the last 3 days in Bangkok, the girls went to shopping as usual and for me, i did a small tour around Bangkok on foot since I had limited cash, so I walked around with my friends; we got a detailed map of Bangkok City. We visited the Chulaloongkorn University which is just located right in the city core, it was a good university with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. We went to the Architecture department as well but none of them understand English so our plan to visit the gallery had to be cancalled. Guess we have to brush up our Thai language soon so the next time we could converse well with them. Another thing i discovered was that the students have to wear Uniform even in University, and it resembles the Japanese high school uniform, just a different tone. White and Black. The guys have to wear formal long sleeves and long pants while the girls dressings are pretty much liberated, in the sense that they could wear either long pants or skirts. Somehow, the university students look akin to Chinenese and Japanese, as they have a fairer skin.

Recapitulation III. The Canningway

Here's another project. Apparently, the "client" felt a special attachment to water, and would like to stress it on the overall design. He was particularly vexed by the statement:

"a rest area that becomes a boundary between air and water, a place for a bath in water within the passage that clarifies programmatic relationship of public and private."

It was a corner in Armenian Street, S'pore sharing the junction with the road to the Fort Canning Tunnel.
Basically it is a forgotten site amidst the hustle-bustle Orchard Road after the abolition of Old Tao Nan School and relocation of the National Library 10 years ago. Current site experiencing less human traffic which partly explains why Armenian Street losses its vibrancy especially when the night approaches, sets quietly in the dark. A small breeze would be enough to chill your bones.

So, the aim for the project was to create a passageway from point A to B that addresses a sequence – open closed open, and at the same time explores the relation of inside and outside, an experience of a threshold. Using timber planks as basic construction materials, the openings were deliberately adjusted to catch maximum natural light whilst filter off unnecessary heat during the day. By raising the structure several feet up the ground, the quality of hard wood resting on soft land were further enhanced creating an overall sense of light and balanced. Moreover, fragmentation of a dull yet solitary space into three sub-portions of instinct qualities fair enough to attract different groups of users, bringing live and vibrancy back to the forgotten old.

In response to his profound statement,

"The boundary between air and water, a place experiences private and public spaces is becoming vulnerable in the rain of tropics, simply transforms from old to new without forgetting the old."

that's why, Dynamically-oriented roofs call for the direct visual perceptions of The Clear and The Obscure. When the rain falls, users experience a curtain of water walls rolling down from left to right or vice-versa when they walk pass the walkway. Open-Closed-Open.

We were told to design a simple house covering a parameter of <15m in an abstract location, for a client who is a frequent star-gazer and somebody who enjoys his privacy pretty much. In a simpler term, he's kinda a hermit leading a simple life and has visitors occasionally.

Proposal: Taking the site to be a flat land with few vegetation, a corner that provides vista of the grassland is crucial which at the same time, being partially submerged in the scarce foliage.
A bedroom overlooking shady nook, a place for a small drink with friends. A space consists of 3 segmented compartments, leading from public to private . At the same time, the kitchen and bedroom is fully enclosed from views especially in living room that undoubtedly contributes to the privacy level of the client.

The funny thing is ... I can't really find a good topic whenever to start posting an entry. Guess I have been thinking too much.

Fast-forward to 9th July, made a spontaneous visit to U SM with Dear and friends. Was eager to explore but keenness seemed to have boiled down somehow. Those I was longing for were nowhere to bee seen.

In response to the previous post and partly to my frigid poll results (oh finally I've got 2 responses, thanks man!),　I guess it's time for me to write about bits and pieces of my life.

After getting more familiar with the stark reality, I know there's a better place for our hearts to be. Apart from breaking the ice and usual hobnobbing with the cruel reality, the other side of me yearning for rootedness, in search for the rites of belongings that has long been embeded in each of the human beings. Yes, i work pretty much in retrospect lately. Thanks to dear, for accompanying me all the time, regardless of my whimsical quest for the truth, for something that best addresses our community. Live a day without you is not something I wish to feel, as the seeds I've planted for you is real, together we face this world brandnew.

My quest,
Reasons? The true fact of life is: there is some thing never change, that is everything is changing.
There is no cobwebs if we do not take into account a spider's effort. For every permutations, there is a beginning, there is an owner. Reflect upon reality, many things and happenings share this very powerful relationship which underlie daily processes so frequent so that it virtually sets this whole "mechanism" off our everyday backdrops. More often than not, we don't see the Creator, but the ensuing occurrence that takes place. Just as we often miss the Culprit who set ablaze some dilapidated houses. There are more, if we keep on contemplating.

As a Penangite, it's our pride to be recognized as being a community that's overwhelmed with sense of kamcheng (fellow-feeling), a sense of identity, interrelatedness and communal responsibility as according to Jean DeBernardi, a professional anthropologist from University of Alberta who had personally lived in Penang in the 80's just to accomplish her East Asian Studies for Stanford University. "Penang people have the mentality to pray, to earn money, to support Chinese culture and education. You don't see this strength anywhere else in Malaysia. Penang people are exceptionally full of fellow-felling. We must organize our own Chinese - many still do not participate. We must take care of our own house." - (Unknown committee of Central Primordial, Universal Ferry 中元委员会, by JeanBeNardi)
How lasting this sense of belongings and appreciation will be? Well, time never really tell, our hearts do. Do not presume my definition, ain't anybody from the radicals. What we have seen as time fades away is the gradual fragmentation of our community, subdivided into English-educated and Chinese-educated, and thereafter marking a mentality barrier among us, setting bearings in our believes. I've seen Chinese who hatred his/her own mother tongue, saying it a pile of obsolete bullshit. They favor Ang Moh, for a culture they don't even internalized and some thing they'll never do. Surprisingly, they find contentment being stuck in the transitional path, an intermediate between the English and the Chinese.

So do they lost in their own identity. Or perhaps we called it a hybrid?

It's a widespread disintegration, educationally, socio-politically, even religion. It doesn't really matter.
As long as whoever speaks has the heart to serve.

Not to exaggerate the fact, I got a shock in my life hearing this phenomenon from my friend, whom i refer to as anonymous, apparently this girl who regarded Chinese music as some form of kitsch, uttered her profuse hatred so proudly simply because English songs have melted her heart with their varieties. According to her, Modern Chinese songs only care about love, love and no more. Unlike English songs that well-addressed all range of relationships. Ah, forgive me to say she hasn't known her culture well enough, I just can't help to say.
Music, a fusion of mind and soul, apart from judging the lyrics and whatsoever, the flow of rhythm best encapsulates the overall meaning, conveying certain sentiments that cater for different occasions. Words enhance the feeling, so to say. Open up your heart and listen, you'll find your soul revitalized once again. In fact, there are plentiful traditional Chinese songs that truly speaks the Oriental believe.

It's time for us to cast off our notorious past, stop being the infamies of mercenariness, self-fishness and arrogance. Open up the passageway for better understanding and mutual believes.

Deep down our roots, we know, we were bestowed this wonderful Identity, on the 1st, 9th and 15th day of First Lunar Month we come together celebrate Chinese New Year, Heaven God Worship and Chap Goh Meh; on the 5th of 5th Lunar Month we savor dumplings and some try letting the eggs stand still when the clock strikes 12 noon; on the 1st and 15th of 7th Lunar Month we celebrate the Hell Gate openings, treating deceased ancestors with foods and Participate Poh Toh; on 9th Lunar Month we have abstinent from meaty foods, we consume vege foods in conjunction with the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. For some who do not participate due to religion difference, there is one day that all of us will surely meet, the Chinese New Year eve. Ritual has "united" us, keeping us in close contact amidst this advanced cyber era. We might not be knowing each others that much as we used to be, but there's a place for our hearts to be.

To me, Culture is the cradle of Architecture, it speaks of the spatial existence; of rituals, of customs, of believes, that conjoined Science & Technology in the most functional way meaningfully. Beautiful.

随着数码与电子界的交锋，生活空间也渐被电脑取代。
它偷偷地侵蚀，埋伏在生活的各个角落；
走了二十一年，蓦然回首，才发觉大部分的记载已被它吞噬了。
手与纸的关系变淡了，取代思索的键盘在早年前已开工了。

就论时下最愚蠢笑话，尽管今朝科技多“好料”，原来名字最重要，让我不禁感叹这世界真奇妙！

人曰清水出芙蓉，乱世见英雄！我看，虽然经济萧条，首府好歹也出了个狗熊，只差一个字，品质再差也敢做保证. 没法子，一言既出，驷马难追，一意孤行还不如自认识字少，把天空与大海给搞乱了。就连世卫都澄清了疾病的一切来龙去脉，流感就流感嘛，还挂上猪名，真不明白人跟猪怎么能扯上关系呢？相必是人头猪脑的杰作吧，才会对自身上的一部分感兴趣。

又轮到它一年一度的拜访了，
这日子，总感觉很陌生，也许时光是最糟的巴黎士塔，泡的咖啡愈来愈淡。
不知从何开始小康之家遗失了那份糖，惟有苦苦的咖啡每日相伴。从橙褐色到黑色, 生活也得打十二分精神，这遥远的行程，也见识了许多东西，我不怪他那比预期早买的机票。

当飞机在蔚蓝天下航行时，您又可知道云朵下暴风雨的侵袭么？
别操心，我们已有石灰的保护。

岁月如水流，以往的人情世故也不再追求。
这将是新的一章，新的希望，新的角色。

What happened for the last few months.

Guess I should be more serious about my blog posts... so I have decided to write something personal today.
Basically the last 6 months was eminently enjoyable and interesting to have known so much things in such a short period of time. At least it was fruitful in terms of intellectual thinking and sensory experiences. - A journey that was promised, not so much of instant gratification, but a long-term enlightening discourse instead.

The past 6 months was fast..passed in a glimpse of eyes..
I went to this almost forgotten site in Singapore - Haw Par Villa, a place in the limelight back in the 90's. To me it epitomizes Chinese culture & believe pretty much. From stories of 24 fillial piety to the 18 torturing hangar down in the Hell. Although some modern Chinese might that it has gone too obsolete but still it instils a deep sense of gratitude in our inner sanctum. It serves as a reminder to all younger & future generations of good deeds that should never be forgotten. In a way, it sounds like advices from the ancestors that echoed the chinese community nowadays.

I like the breeze, fresh air brought by gust of winds outside this rejuvenating vermilion midnight, accompanied by droplets of drizzles melted on the cold concrete blocks. It dawned upon me that I am back again in my little cosy home. How magnificent an architecture could offer to its master, perhaps not master-slave relationship exactly. or Shall I rephrase it to "How magnificent an architecture could offer to its companion, in this long-lasting partnership that underlies temporal comfort and contentment?"

It shant be deemed as an slavery act for the mutual chemical that react within the spaces, neither should it be classified as a One Way Street as if the relationship was based on a direct one to one encounter. There lies the reciprocal, when a space gains control over human behaviours. Sick Building Syndrome is just another undesirable effect of such puissance. A back-and-forth motion, suggested by the A.C. current would be examplary for such relationship. Slotting a plug is akin to laying a brick. Hence, when your buildings are built, you can tell, how the relationship pervades the air, sparkling sense of mutual dominance is intense enough to resonate you.

The fact that human commands the spaces or vice-versa is purely personal. One can't tell your self-consciousness for sure you're the one guiding it. For the former, let's take an architect whose job is to design a scheme for family of five; he can't propose three rooms of relatively the same size without taking into consideration of the age factor, by then he would have to come out with suitable programs so to speak, to furnish users much more options of daily lives, be it another balcony or private courtyard. He can then add an arch, subtract the light shelves, doubles the skylights or divides the number of openings to fit the common ETTV values (which only applies in Spore). As for the latter, spaces; posseses the anticipation & qualities of an architect, reigns its sovereignty over the bricks and enforces certain life qualities towards the users. A sliding wooden frame could invoke somebody's memories and meant nothings for somebody's else. A mirror accentuates self-contentment by reflecting beauties or terrfies you by horrible looks. A glass panel invites curiosity or cast out criminals. A rotunda functions as a place of regalia - point of rejoices or just another sorrowful mourning court in the crematorium. Feeling emanates from Spaces, so do Architecture & Perception.

What feeling does it invoke?

Serenity, Haunted?

Pride & Glory?

What if the staircases were built-into the annex, covered by full concrete blocks?

Even care needs to be taken for the selection of tiles.... it makes a difference

Feeling sorry for being indifferent towards my teeny-weeny blogging world again, for about three months since the very last post. Darn. Can't help cuz falling in "architorture" - a new phrase I had learned being part of the angst-y studio.

I guess a better way to describe the studio life is not a horrible place brimming with mere sense of masochism neither a tang of sadism, rather an intellectual hatchery which boosts up your brain lobes by at least one fold. (not too bad i guess). The teachings basically encompasses a hollistic approach, ranging from architecture in reality, wood, scale, proportion, function to as far as the Orion stars, Mintaka,constellations, light years wavefront to wonderful biological metabolism.It encourages thinking beyond the paper, not to say abstract but embedded information which are still in much relevant to the topics. At some point, it triggers the conundrum of pedagogy especially in the academe.

How the Asian were brought up, How did the Westerners perceive the world, What concerns an Asian, a Westerner, or a human as a whole?
It is no doubt that these often lead to a prolonged discourse over the tedious issue of teaching methodologies but on the primary, it reflects the basis of our existency, Who we are and What's our identity?

When Datuk Lim Chong Keat lectured about the rising identity theft by the ubiquitous Western culture, the fact that regionalism in Asia was misclassified and being omitted by the lost of Asian consciousness, failure of her to reproduce form and identity that mingle with cultural diversity almost mark an end to her wonderful heyday.
When Mr. John F.C. constantly engaged in the discourse of overpopulation and self-sustenance, the surge of inhabitants across Asian countries poses menace against society and architecture not to mention the self-sustainable issues that has not been addressed finely even today.
Again, When Mr. Florian shared his tits & bits of the architectural life, when he persistently urged us to think beyond visual senses, internalizing the information around us...

The question are: What are the predominant roles of architect in the Tropics today?
Have we been blindfolded, minimizing our senses for fear of harnessing far-fetched?
Have we...or are we still living in the nebulous reality?

It would have been great if someday the enigma would finally reach its culminating point, as spring reveals and snow thaws after countless snowstorm.

Perhaps, the Fibonacci Numbers will keep on proceed to the infinity.

Holidays.
It's the occassion that most people would be quite free to enjoy what they are going after in their lives. Some people chose to work, spent a workaholicdays; some people opted for shopping, thus had a "shopaholicdays";
a minority would spend their day idling at home, which could be treated as having a "idloholicdays"?

whatever it is, holidays still remains a self-defined occasion, be it a boon or bane to our interpersonal growth.
In fact, there are some people who spent their holidays in a meaningful ways which is a paradigm for the youths.
I guess I am not much different than a slacker after all. SO I SLACKED.

Speaking about friendship, how one is being defined? It seems that generally friendship could be found everywhere, from attending some school events to working firms. That's a general perception about the term "friend". To put it in a more discrete way, we have unintentionally pre-defined our own "friends" when we have gone to a new place. We classify them as "colleagues" , "companions", "mates - studio, group, whatever".....and so on depending on the social context we are mingling with on a day to day basis.
So the social network grows, just as spider stretching its cobweb from one corner of your house to the other.
But oddly enough, does it take care of its own web?
In that case, do we really care for our friends beyond their respesctive categories, are we real, or surreal?
Or we only kept them within their own boundaries. A colleague is a colleague; a true friend is a true friend.

So do some people deemed that Friends are meant to be used.
So do some people deemed that A friend in need is a friend indeed.
So do some people deemed that Everyone is a friend.

I guess, whatever it may be, honesty lies within. Lacking a sense of probity & faithfulness is certainly a harm to our daily communication. I would say : Be Honest & Humble.

And as everybody else on this world would be expecting, good rest and relax come after tiredness, fatigue. Ironically, these ensuing effects really come into your life when you least expect them. So, to deter people from losing faith, the wise had come out with the saying: Work hard, Play harder!

So, if relaxation could revitalize our mental & soul, nourish our sustenance by means of triggering chemical metabolism; play harder would be an alternative, doesn't it sound logical?(with much regard to the quote)

Ok...it sounds rather complicated here...let me try to attempt this teaser:
Play hard means getting know more things in a broad sense. ( in this case, playing more games; knowing more rules & a lil psycology). With all these knowledge in mind and a constant social network, nothing is impossible. We are exposed to more options in life, helping us to make a better & prudent decision. Well, at least, it did not restric our micosopic visual knowlege, seeing without contemplating.

Yet it's strange enough that some people tend to bemuse themselves in their so-called fairty tales. They believe what they have seen, what their have heard, what they have understood were more than enough to keep them prevail across any field in this world.

-You'll never get to convince them.
-You'll never get them open up 10% of their auditory canal to a person like you.
-Worse, they'll presume a judgement on you based on their stuck-up nature & some outdated facts
-Even Worse, they become obsessingly proud of their "xavier" nature, in hope to save you from drowning which in fact just try to control you due to their jealousy soul. I bet they are just mere hypocrites who wish to save fishes from drowning. Jerks~

Fine, just as Ms. Seh used to teach me in her class:

No matter what, let it be;
else so be it.

We design our lives our way, our style. There is not gonna be a better road if confidence is accompanying you all your way. Believing in what you are doing, and doing what you are believing.

So...the architectural school was comprehensive in its teaching methodology...not to mention the broad intellectual thinking involved in the pedagogy. The very first task that came to me was the line drawings...OMG...
Mr. Erik was amazing. His line drawings were so precise and accurate! When he was questioned upon how did he tell, he replied steadily: by practice. So we know how practicality makes its stand in the pursuit of architectural knowledge.
